about

Hoxha was assembled in 1990 from the remnants of our student band An Awkward Shape, augmented by a rhythm section comprised of the two Daves, and Rose Hooper on keyboards. We rehearsed, we gigged, we recorded, we got played on local radio, we got interviewed in the local press, we signed a dodgy contract with an even dodgier management company, all the things that bands love to do. This compilation is by no means a complete record or our songs. Since I'm curating this, I've included just those tracks of which I feel the most proud, although I still find my lyrics cringeworthy. Our annus mirabilis was 1991, it was the most creatively productive year, bookended by two recording sessions, from which the bulk of these tracks are taken. I like to think we were a good live band. I once overheard a sound engineer say we were the best live band in Cardiff. You'll have to take my word for it, but you get some sense of our energy from the three live tracks included here. By mid 1992, it was all over for me. A combination of overwork and a chaotic personal life spilled over onto the stage and I left under a cloud, to be replaced by the estimable Roger, after a friendly farewell gig in Leicester.
Nick and I continued to make music sporadically, but the closest we came to working on pop songs again, was in 1995, a taster of which is included here as a postscript. So, here is Hoxha, before we made like a tree. It was immensely fun while it lasted.

In memory of Dave Carter.
